about

Originally sung by Julien Hoffpauer in New Iberia, Louisiana, this song was originally titled “Mademoiselle Emilie” when it was recorded by John and Alan Lomax in 1934. The rhythm of the song jumped out at me, as if there was a fiddle and drum band playing behind Hoffpauir’s acapela performace. I demo’d this song to tuned bass 808s, triangle, and fiddle, in the isolated depths of the pandemic and learned the lyrics word for word. 'Amourette' is a dialogue between the singer, who comes to bid his “Adieus” to his former lover, Mme. Emilie who finally found a spouse, as he recounts “I’ve wasted my time, and lost my tears, at the cabaret with all your friends… all the beautiful nights we passed, just us two, playing cards and lovers’ dice, I’ve come to say my goodbyes, glass in my hand, but no tears in my eyes”.

The beat was programmed by electro-musical genius Quintron, and was added to with Djembé performed by Shardé Thomas of Rising Stars Fife and Drum band. In all honesty this track was my 5th recorded version of the song, as it took that many tries to get the combination of the right beat with the right feel mirroring the original demo I made on SPD, triangle and vocals, and in what is now the only featured fiddle track on the album. I went so far as to have Kirkland Middleton record me shaking a box of ceramic artifacts we’ve found while farming the land here (mostly okra), to find the right “snare” sound of what I was hearing in my head.

lyrics

Amourette

Ah Mademoiselle Emilie, O si j’avais eu cru

Retire-toi galant, tu perds bien ton temps

Tu as gaspillé ton temps, aussi tes peines perdues

O Mme Emilie, j’etais venu te faire mes adieux

ENGLISH

It was on a Monday that we came to learn
That Miss Emilie had changed lovers

I turned all the way around when I heard
Cause for Miss Emilie, I would go see her

O Miss Emilie, if I had believed
My love wouldn’t have been returned

O I would have left a long time ago
I would have left a long time ago

How many times, I’ve told “gallant, get out of here”
“get outa here gallant, you’re wasting your time”

Yes, I’ve wasted my time, and lost my tears
At the club, girl, with all your friends

“You wasted you time, are the tears you lost
Don’t blame me, I didn’t tell you to come here”

O all the beautiful nights we passed, just us two
Playing cards, and lovers dice

O Miss Emilie I’ve come to say my goodbyes
A glass in my hand, but no tears in my eyes
