Over the last 10 years I began to hear about Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the French Creole composer born in Haiti and raised in Louisiana. Some classical music academia call him the only one of the first American musicians to achieve widespread recognition in both Europe and the Americas. Gottschalk was also known as one of the only musicians to record (thru written music, before the invention of recording devices) the music of the new world, which was actively fusing European dances with African rhythms, from Bamboula of Congo Square in New Orleans, to recently fused and fresh musical forms from Cuba to Brazil. Louis Moreau continuously traveled latin America, and gave “monster concerts” with up to a thousand musicians performing at once, to provide enough sound and dynamics to inundate entire city squares in music. Based on the Aguinaldo “Si Me Dan Pasteles”, a chant-like melody sung during Christmas season by the Jibaro, a people who farm the lands in the countryside, Louis Moreau subtitled the composition composed “La Marche des Gibaros”
Souvenir de Porto Rico was composed by Gottschalk in 1856 during his stay in Plazuela, as he lived withdrawn from society for many months in a tropical retreat on the edge of an extinct volcano. As stated by the composer himself in his journal “perched upon the edge of the crater, on the very top of the mountain, my cabin overlooked the whole country. The rock on which it was built hung over a precipice whose depths were concealed by cacti, convolvuleses and bamboos…Every evening I moved my piano out upon the terrace, and there, in view of the most beautiful scenery in the world, which was bathed by the serene and limnpid atmostphere of the tropics, I played, for myself alone, everything that the scene opened up before me inspired…it was there that I composed “La Marche des Gibaros”…”

The is the real electric hoodoo here. I am of the belief that you can't make make this music proper unless you're raised up in all the tradition. This is all the way right! veenstar
