about

Acadiana Culture Backstep was written from a melody and chord progression that came to me in the waking hours of January 4, 2022. I originally called the melody the Lost Boy Two Step, but then began writing lyrics inspired by the events of previous few years, in which Black Lives Matter protests, especially those around the killing of George Floyd, were causing major polarity in America, worldwide, and here in Acadiana. The effects were seen in local politics, which I saw as hypocritical to an area that celebrates “culture” but is still caught up in race-based politics, and anti-immigration policies. The irony to me is that in such a diverse society as Louisiana, where so many cultures have contributed to the “culture” we pride ourselves on, projects and parks in the African-American community continue to be underfunded, and where people who are the descendants of immigrants are now anti-immigrant. Such is the way of the world, and the sentiments were exacerbated in 2020 and 2021.

lyrics

Tout partout moi j’ai rouler
Tout-quek’un veut faire parti
Mais y’en a pas grande
Qui peut se rappeler
Que le monde est tout pareil

Dans les années par ici
On a oublier d’éyou on venait

ENGLISH

Every I’ve seen
Everyone wants to take part
But there’s not many
Who remember
That everyone is cut from the same cloth

Over the years around here
We’ve forgotten from where we’ve come
Not long ago we were immigrants
Arriving with nothing

Speak of “the culture”
Like a boaster
But on the other hand
On the side of liars
Stealing from the colored communities
‘Conspiring with the racists

Still today the same pains and trials
Rich and the Poor and the Haters
Ameri-Cajuns who see themselves as better
Even though they come from plowers / laborers
