The phrase chank-a-chank has been used to describe Cajun and Creole music, but the root of the word has been a mystery to me, until I was asked to transcribe an
interview of Columbus Frugé for American Epic. In the interview he says he would steal his neighbor’s accordion while he was gone for work, and he would “chanquaillier en cachet dehors”, which I translate as him “messing around” with the accordion, hidden under an oak tree on the banks of Bayou Teche in Arnaudville. Colombus “Boy” Fruge then begins to play “La mazurka qu’a capoter Lina” (the mazurka that made Lina fall over), and continues talking about how his mother had books in French, and how some people could read and write French, while others could not. I remixed made a bit with the Syndrum tone and snare, and remixed the elements of the recording over it, and called it Tchén-Ka-Yay, which I now believe to be the root of Chank-a-Chank.
