about

Written as a commission for a descendant of Jean Baptiste Baham, a Frenchman from Aquitane who was eventually known as Jean Cuan dit Gentil after taking oath of allegiance to the British upon his arrival in Mobile, Alabama, this song recounts the story of the founder of “La Coquille” (Madisonville, Louisiana) a town nestled at the mouth of the “Bayou Chiffantay” (Tchefuncte River) and Lake Pontchartrain.

In doing the research to write this historical tale of the voyage of a Frenchman, who pled allegiance to Britain upon arriving in the new world, and who eventually founded a town in Louisiana on the 10,000 arpent Spanish Land Grant, I found another story line, and so began a whole nother song, ‘Le Cas de Marguerite’.

Jean Cuan married Francoise, a French Creole born on Dauphin Island, who’s mother died when she was young. Her father, Joseph, soon remarried with Marguerite, the slave he and his late wife had purchased to help raise their family. Le Cas de Marguerite came up in the research, and eventually “In the early 1980's, a Louisiana court case made headlines when a woman sued the State of Louisiana to have herself declared to be of the white race, questioning a state law which required her to be registered as "colored" because her descent included 1/32 Negro blood. This woman was a direct descendant of Joséph-Pierre Grégoire, and his slave, Marguerite (Spanish = Margarita). This 20th century court case brought to light long buried details of a 200-year-old court case that has become known as "The Margarita Case." “
