One of my all time favorites from the Lomax collection, Les Beaux Jours speaks of how loves and good times, they’re good, but they don’t last forever. We make love when we can, NOT when we want. I finally picked up my guitar one morning and layed down chords to the acapela performance from 1934, and began recording it straight into my 4 track reel-to-reel tape recorder. As soon as I would start playing, I noticed the birds seemed to sing along, so fitting for a song about making love, and thinking about making love. Like many of these recordings, I recorded the birds singing while I performed, with a pair of stereo mics mounted on the front of Sister Ray, the dry docked houseboat gifted to me by production mentor and collaborator, Korey Richey. I even played the song back for the birds, which made them sing even more, and recorded their reaction, so in this recording are the birds from the first performance, as well as birds singing back to the love calls from the original recording.
