I woke up on January 1, new years day of 2022, with this song playing in my head from a dream. I walked straight from bed to Sister Ray (the dry-docked houseboat in my back yard that I call my studio) and picked up a guitar to figure out the movement of chords, while whistling the melody still looping in my thoughts, a waltz based of the La Valse des Cherokis. My lyrics speak of my independent experience and the trials and tools needed to survive as an artist, the violin; my sword, the pen; my dagger, and my mind; my shelter. The imagery continues with the bow in one hand, symbolic for both the violin bow and the hunting bow, a tool with which to find my meat, strung in “tarabi”, the native word for horse-hair, which is the same word for rope made of cured Spanish moss, a term I became familiar with while constructing a bousillage wall in my home. The other hand is holding the reins of my horse, but only loosely, an act of faith in trusting the process, letting the horse take me on the best road as he knows better. The second verse speaks of the values of the old times; “if I show up to say hi, you can offer me a coffee, even a Cachimbo (pipe), “a little coffee to smoke with”, let me see the old days, content to live with what we have, I came back slowly from the city, where people advance so fast.” In researching the etymology for Cachimbo, the Louisiana French word for pipe, it comes via Portuguese and originally from Kimbundu (Angola), but the research also blew my mind a bit saying Kimbundu had also made its way into the Cherokee language “DhAW” from “ngola” meaning “the king’s title” hence the Kingdom of Angola (quite the ironic metaphor here in Louisiana), and even the word “gombo” comes from the same tongue, meaning both “gumbo” and “okra” as we call it in Louisiana French gombo-fevi.
The Troubadour’s Dream represents the world I walk through as an artist, both inside my head and navigating the real world; taking risks to leave my comfort zone, and protecting myself in the world while staying in my magic.
lyrics
ENGLISH
The violin is my sword
The pen my dagger
My steps and my past
The foundation I’ve grown
The bow in one hand
Strung in horse hair
The other loosely holding the reins
My head is my shelter
If I show up to visit
You can offer me a coffee
Or better a Pipe; a Cachimbo
A little coffee to smoke with
Let me see the old ways
Content with what we have to survive
I came back slowly
People in the city gain too fast

The is the real electric hoodoo here. I am of the belief that you can't make make this music proper unless you're raised up in all the tradition. This is all the way right! veenstar
